What to Wear When Fishing in Myrtle Beach

If deep-sea fishing is on your list of things to do in Myrtle Beach this summer, then you won’t be disappointed. Fishing adventures in Myrtle Beach have been a tourist and angler’s favorite for decades. And though fishing charters are one of the most popular tourist activities at Crazy Sister Marina, we want to ensure our guests play it safe when it comes to hours on end in the bright sun.

Take a look at our list of suggestions below on how to protect yourself from the elements and those harmful UV rays if you add a fishing trip to your list of things to do in Myrtle Beach.

Dress the part for deep sea fishing in Myrtle Beach with a long-sleeved t-shirt and windbreaker

As with any sport, you need to dress accordingly. You likely dress one way to go ice skating, another way to go rock climbing, and yet another way if you are going to hit a club to rock the night away and dance your socks off. Likewise, you need to dress the part if you plan to go on a deep-sea fishing trip. A random t-shirt and cowboy boots aren’t going to cut it. So, start by paying attention to the weather and packing accordingly. We often suggest that anglers bring a windbreaker and a long-sleeved t-shirt to protect them from a chilly wind or any rain that might head our way.

We also recommend that you bring or wear a short-sleeved t-shirt. You can wear this on top of your long-sleeved t-shirt when the weather is chilly, and you can easily switch to a short-sleeved shirt when the sun comes out, and the air starts to warm up. Also, look for shorts or pants made of UV-resistant material if possible to have extra protection. And, go for a fitted look as too much excess fabric can pose a safety risk.

Sandals and flip-flops should be avoided when deep sea fishing in Myrtle Beach

Believe it or not, the shoes you wear when participating in a fishing charter really do matter. Whether you are fishing on the head boat or fishing off your boat rental, there are some guidelines for the best shoes to wear. Barefoot fishing, in particular, may feel convenient. However, your feet are then exposed to direct sunlight, and they are also much more prone to injury.

When deep-sea fishing, the best shoes to wear should have rubber soles, be non-skid, and be made with breathable material. This way, your feet won’t be too hot or too cold and will be better protected from the elements, and any runaway lures.

Don’t go deep-sea fishing in Myrtle Beach without slathering on the sunscreen

When you’re out on the waters in the Murrells Inlet area, your skin runs the risk of getting burned by the sun. Not only that, but the reflection of the sun off the water’s surface can add fuel to the fire. Be sure to apply sunscreen on any exposed skin to help lessen your risks of developing skin cancer. We suggest sunscreen with an SPF 50 or above. Then, reapply sunscreen at least every two hours, so don’t forget to bring it with you.

Remember too that your lips can also suffer from the damaging effects of direct sunlight. Thus, be sure to apply lip balm with sun protection to protect your lips from getting chapped or sunburnt.
