Where did Myrtle Beach get its name in the first place? Trees! There’s a unique variety of trees called wax myrtle trees that are common to this area, which is where the city got its name. Before it was known by its current moniker, Myrtle Beach had other names including “Long Bay,” “New Town,” and “Withers.” A “name the town” contest in 1900 resulted in the permanent name of Myrtle Beach, with “Edgewater” finishing second.

Myrtle Beach has plenty of rich history, and over the years, it’s also served as home to quite a few well-known residents. Former NFL player Brandon Frye was born here in Myrtle Beach, and current NFL player Josh Norman grew up just a short drive away in Greenwood.
