Kayaking 101
Kayaking 101
One of the most popular activities in Myrtle Beach is kayaking. It’s fun, it’s great exercise, and you can take in the sights of the inlet at your own pace. And with the wide availability of kayak rentals in the area, anyone can get out on the water. At Crazy Sister Marina, you can even book a guided tour, so you won’t miss any of the scenery!
But what if you’ve never been kayaking before? No worries. Here’s a quick guide on what to expect when you’re shopping for Myrtle Beach kayak rentals.
What Kind of Kayak Should I Use?
Generally speaking, there are two different types of kayaks: sit-on-top and sit inside.
Sit-on-top kayaks don’t have an enclosed seat. Instead, as their name implies, the seat is mounted directly on top of the kayak. This makes them easier to get in and out of. In addition, they’re generally wider and more stable than sit inside kayaks. On the one hand, this makes them easier for beginners. On the other hand, they tend to be slower and less maneuverable.
Sit inside kayaks are probably what you picture when you hear the word “kayak”. You sit in an enclosure, which provides some protection from splashing. They’re generally harder to get into than sit-on-top kayaks, but they’re easier to maneuver and can go faster. This is the type of kayak you can rent from Crazy Sister.
In addition to the design itself, you also need to consider the number of seats. Most kayaks carry a single passenger. However, there are many kayak rentals available with two or even three seats.
What Equipment Do I Need?
One nice thing about kayaking is that there’s very little equipment required. All you need is the kayak itself, and a paddle and life jacket for each passenger. Any reputable kayak rental service will provide you with a life jacket. If they don’t, you should avoid going out in the water in one of their kayaks.
How Do I Get Into a Kayak?
If you’re renting a kayak, you’re most likely going to be getting in and out of it from a dock. To get into the kayak, first sit on the edge of the dock, with your legs hanging over. Next, put your legs into the kayak and quickly lower the rest of your body and turn so you’re facing the front. If you need to, you can use the paddle to help keep your kayak in place.
But what if you fall out while you’re in the water?
In that case, the process is a bit more complicated. First, put one hand on the side of the kayak that’s closest to you, and the other hand on the opposite side. Next, pull yourself over the top of the kayak until your belly is directly over the seat. Then, twist your body so you’re sitting in the seat. Do this before you remove your feet from the water. Finally, you can pull your feet out of the water and put them inside the kayak.
Congratulations! You’re ready to keep on paddling!
