Suppose you are in the Myrtle Beach area and are interested in deep-sea charter fishing. In that case, you’ll be pleased to know that marine anglers are often delighted by catching black sea bass, snapper, grouper, triggerfish, dolphin, wahoo, king mackerel, tarpon, cobia, and larger sea bass.

Myrtle Beach charter fishing excursions are a popular way to enjoy the waters along the coast between the Atlantic Ocean and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. If you want to catch the big one and have a fish-tale to tell your friends for years to come, be sure to check out our list of tips for successful deep-sea fishing.

10 Tips for Myrtle Beach Deep Sea Fishing

Before you go, be sure to prepare for the elements. Be prepared with sunscreen, a hat, and polarized sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. Consider taking a motion sickness tablet at least 30 minutes in advance of going out on a boat, and wear motion sickness bands or chew on some ginger gum if you are prone to seasickness.

  1. Be on the lookout for spinner and spotted dolphins as they love to travel and swim alongside yellowfin tuna. Have your camera ready too.
  2. If you are looking to catch a tuna, be sure to use fast-trolling lures.
  3. Know that smaller fish are prime targets for larger fish. So if you see a lot of small fish in the area, it likely means you are in an excellent place to capture that trophy fish you are hoping to hook. Reefs and boat-wrecks make great places to find these targeted fish.
  4. As with smaller fish, if you see seagulls in the area, this might also signal to you that there are larger fish nearby. Seagulls tend to flock around areas where there are schools of small fish.
  5. Use artificial bait to troll or buoy and get the attention of fish in the area. If you have it available, use natural bait for even better luck.
  6. Fish finders and GPS can come in quite handy when deep-sea fishing. If you plan to rent a sportfishing boat, make sure that it is equipped with one of these units so that you can increase your chances of a successful outing. If you book a charter, your captain and first mate will likely have one of these on their boat already and will use information from their GPS and experience to find you a prime fishing location.
  7. If you are operating your own boat, anchor the boat safely above a reef and drop your bait down into the reef to increase your chances of catching snapper or grouper.
  8. If you are bottom fishing, make sure you let down enough line so that the bait gets down where it needs to. You can use a lure with a sizeable heavy-duty jig if needed.
  9. If you are new to boating or deep-sea fishing, consider hiring a charter boat or deep-sea fishing excursion company for a half-day or full day of fishing. Guides in the Myrtle Beach area are highly experienced and will help you maximize your deep-sea fishing experience.
