About 30 minutes south of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is the quaint yet vibrant town of Murrells Inlet. Housing nearly 10,000 people and boasting a beautiful location on the coastline, Murrells Inlet has become a relaxing paradise away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Learn more about the history of one of America’s oldest coastal communities before you pay a visit for yourself!

The Early Days

The history of Murrells Inlet can be traced back to 1731 when it was founded by John Morall. The town grew quickly in its early days, thanks in large part to its prime location in the midst of the state’s rice empire. Ships traveled through the ports of Murrells Inlet with all kinds of crops and other useful products, including cotton, peanuts, turpentine, and more.

Murrells Inlet may have a bit of a dark side to its past as well. The area was thought to play host to notorious pirates like Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard as they stopped to get supplies and clean their ships! Today, tours around the city can show you where these sea dogs may have stopped.

The City Grows

As the Civil War approached, Murrells Inlet found itself at the center of multiple attacks. The city maintained secret shipping routes servicing customers in the North and in Britain. Six warships came to the inlet in 1863 with plans of total destruction, but the city managed to set fire to the enemy ships and defend itself with just one ship of its own.

The plantation industry collapsed once slavery was abolished after the Civil War, so Murrells Inlet needed a new way to make money. Luckily for them, business owners became interested in the area after President Grover Cleveland visited for a duck hunting trip in 1894. As the 20th century began, the city started to morph into the well-loved vacation destination it is today.
